Chipotle Mexican Grill founder Steve Ells built an empire on chicken and beef burritos made in assembly-line fashion. Now he’s dropping the meat and is adding machines. Ells early next year will open in Manhattan the first location of Kernel, serving meat-free sandwiches, salads and sides made to order. A skeleton crew will run the restaurants alongside robots, making faux chicken sandwiches and sides such as cucumbers with wild rice.

More than a decade after meeting with McDonald's, Shaich started seriously considering selling Panera as he prepared to step down from the business. Robots and automation are becoming a bigger part of restaurants from Wendy's to Chili's. According to documents obtained by the Post, the startup, called Kernel, uses a model featuring three human workers directing robots along an assembly line. Spokesperson Sarah Rosenberg confirmed to the Post that Ells is at the startup's helm and elements of its plan. Ells grew Chipotle and helped popularize fast casual dining before stepping down as CEO in 2017 after various foodborne illness outbreaks at its restaurants. Ells is far from the first to propose using robots and other technologies in restaurants to automate various procedures and rely on fewer workers.

Chipotle Mexican Grill is launching a new spinoff, called Farmesa Fresh Eatery, in a California ghost kitchen. And, "when the time is right," Lawton said, Chipotle will use its loyalty program database to attract potential Farmesa customers. When opened, the Santa Monica location will be Kitchen United's 24th ghost kitchen. For Chipotle, Kitchen United's model allows the restaurant chain to test out the new brand with reduced risk. For now, Chipotle's chief purpose with the location is simply to learn, but that doesn't mean Farmesa won't grow.

Disney is looking to Bob Iger to lead the company and to find another successor — again. It's critical for returning CEOs to approach the job as if it were their first time. Disney shares jumped as much as 10% on Monday after the company announced that Iger would replace his hand-picked successor, Bob Chapek. The researchers didn't study the reasons why returning CEOs performed worse, but wrote in a 2020 article that many returning CEOs "barely recognize the company upon returning." Being "mindfully alert" as a returning CEO, Kauffman said, means you are "not bringing judgments to the table, but trying to keep an open mindset."
